1969 Super Cobra Jet Mustang Mach 1
Up for sale is my 1 of 1 R-Code Ram Air Wimbledon White Super Cobra Jet. This car was built at Metuchen on 2-24-1969. It was sold by McCrackin-Sturman Ford Inc. I purchased the car from who I understand to be the third owner. He had purchased this car and a Shelby GT-500. The second owner had purchased this car during the 1970’s and drag raced the car until around 1983. This rare car was known as the “RAT CATCHER” for most of its racing career. The car had sat approximately 20 years. This owner had enjoyed the car and intended on restoring it. A serious illness caused the sale of the car. My understanding is that the car raced in several national championships. I have a postcard showing the car racing in the late 70’s which will be included in the sale.
I have owned this car for approximately 6 years, 5 of which it has undergone a complete restoration. Due to the drag racing history, the engine and transmission are long gone, but I have focused the past 6 years locating as many date-code correct parts as possible. I have focused on parts three months previous to the build date of the car.
Exterior – The exterior has been painted the correct Wimbledon White, Ford #1619-A with the black-out hood treatment. It was done in a professional shop with no expenses spared. The car is show quality.
Interior – The interior has been restored to the original deluxe black clarion knit/vinyl interior. It has the rear fold-down seat. The interior is very nice. It has an aftermarket stereo which looks original, but it can connect to USB and MP3’s. An original AM stereo will be included with the car, but I am unsure of the condition.
The horn does not work, and the gas tank has a new sending unit but needs wires connected to have fuel gauge work.
Drive train – 428 Super Cobra Jet Engine built to factory specs for the SCJ by professional engine shop, (C-code block, Lemans Rods, etc…) , Correct oil cooler, Close ratio top loader 31 Spline 4 Speed rebuilt by professional shop with warranty, Correct drag pack 3.91 with nodular (Detroit Locker style rear end ). I have another shift knob for the car which has a brown handle with blue stripes. The car runs extremely well and it is fun to drive. It currently has manual steering by preference.
I have the invoice for the car, the rarity report, and the MartiAutoWorks report, nicely framed, that will be going with the car.
This car is 1 of 1. There were only 281 Wimbledon White Mustangs in 1969 with 428 Ram Air Engines and 4 Speed Transmissions. 140 of these had black mach 1 bucket seats. 27 of those had 428SCJ Engines with 3.91 Traction-Lok Rear Axles. Only 12 of those had sport deck rear seats. Only 3 had AM Radios installed. Of them, all 3 had power steering, disc brakes, and tinted glass. This one had no other options.
Some interesting information – The base price in 1969 for this car was $3,122.00. The original owner added the following option:
428 CID 4V 8 Cylinder Ram Air $357.46
4 Speed Manual Transmission $253.92
Drag-Pack, $155.45
visibility group $11.16
/5/ F70X14 W/O BLTD W.WHT LTRS $13.05
Sport Deck Rear Seat $97.21
Power Steering $94.95
Power front disc brakes $64.77
AM Radio $61.40
Tinted glass $32.44
These extra options made the price increase to $4,315.76. It was sold on 4/26/1969.
This car has been beautifully restored and is being sold as is. Please ask questions and/or come see in person before purchasing. I love this car, but with 4 children, I have not been able to enjoy as much as I should. I am selling to pursue other hobbies.
